Monroe is the seat of Monroe County and its largest city, with a population of 20,462 at the 2020 census in a county of about 155,000. It sits where the River Raisin reaches Lake Erie, roughly thirty-five miles south of Detroit, and I-75 runs along its western edge — which makes it one of the few markets in this region where Detroit and Toledo are both an easy drive.
The housing runs older and closer in than most of what I cover. Two National Register historic districts sit in the middle of town: Old Village, which is the downtown commercial core with apartments and offices above the storefronts on Monroe Street, and the East Elm–North Macomb Street district, about three quarters of a square mile of houses running north from the river, some of them standing since the 1820s. Outside those, the city is mostly twentieth-century subdivisions, and the edges give way quickly to township land where the tax bill, the schools and the answers on water and sewer can all change within a mile.
Monroe Public Schools serves the city from eight buildings; Airport and Jefferson are the neighboring districts, and which one an address falls in is worth settling before anything else. La-Z-Boy has kept its world headquarters here, and the River Raisin National Battlefield Park — the only national battlefield park marking a War of 1812 site — has grown into the reason a lot of people first drive into town. Monroe County is home ground for me: Dundee, where I live, is twenty minutes west.

Grouped by the government a home answers to. City taxes, township taxes and village government are three different bills, and a Monroe mailing address can sit under any of them. Recorded plats are not everyday neighborhood names, so check jurisdiction and school assignment by address, not by heading.
