About Old Village
Old Village is the center of Monroe: the commercial and residential core of the county seat, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 6 May 1982. What defines it is the row buildings along Monroe Street — small businesses at street level with apartments and offices on the floors above, the arrangement a nineteenth-century downtown was built for and which a good many downtowns lost.
The district is not only shops. City hall, the post office, and the county courthouse and jail all sit inside or at its edges, which is what makes this a working downtown rather than a preserved one. Living here means living above or beside the business of the county.

What is actually here
The listed district covers the downtown commercial blocks and the buildings immediately around them. Upper floors along Monroe Street carry apartments and offices, so the residential stock here is largely not detached houses — it is space above the street, in buildings that predate the idea of a separate downtown and neighborhood.
For a buyer that is the whole point and the whole caution at once. It is walkable in a way nothing else in Monroe County is, and it is governed by a historic district, which shapes what can be changed on a facade. Ask before you plan.
Where it sits
Old Village is on the River Raisin, in the middle of the city, with the East Elm – North Macomb Street district immediately north across the river. I-75 runs along the western edge of Monroe, so Detroit is about thirty-five miles north and Toledo is a shorter drive south.
