About Canton Forest

Canton Forest is a condominium community in northern Canton, south of Warren Road and reached off Saratoga Circle, in the 48187 ZIP code. It went up around 1992; most units have a basement and a one- or two-car attached garage.

It sits in Canton Township, Wayne County — a township that reached 98,659 residents by 2020, making it Michigan's second most-populated. It became a Michigan township on 7 March 1834, named after a city in China like the neighboring Nankin and Peking townships, and it is the only one of the three still carrying that name; New England settlers arrived after the Erie Canal opened in 1825 and farmed the flat ground for well over a century.

Canton was the Sweet Corn Capital of Michigan from 1925 to 1970 and counted about 5,300 residents as late as 1961. I-275, completed in 1977, put a township of farms within an hour of most of metropolitan Detroit, and the population approached 50,000 by the 1980 census. Nearly every subdivision here belongs to some phase of that forty-year build-out — ask me which phase this one falls in.
