Petersburg

A city of 1,171 on the River Raisin, and the reason the schools are called Summerfield

Petersburg is a city of 1,171 people at the 2020 census, in western Monroe County, surrounded by the northern part of Summerfield Township. The River Raisin — the same one that runs through Dundee and reaches Lake Erie at Monroe — forms part of the northwestern edge of the city.

The name confuses people, and the history explains it. The community was founded as Summerfield: Richard Peters came to the area in 1824 and became the first postmaster when the Summerfield post office opened in April 1831, and in 1836 two Monroe men, Thomas Cole and Austin Wing, formally established the community on land bought from him. It took his name and kept the old one everywhere else, which is why the township is Summerfield, the school district is Summerfield, and the city is Petersburg. It incorporated as a village in 1869 and as a city in 1967, the same year as Milan up the road.

Summerfield Schools serves the city from two buildings, an elementary for the younger grades and a junior/senior high above it, and the district covers all of Summerfield Township plus a small portion of neighboring Dundee and Ida townships. So an address here is a city address inside a township-wide district — city taxes and services, but schools shared with the farmland around it. Dundee is a short run north and Ann Arbor is up US-23 from there.
