Milan

Milan is a city of 6,079 people at the 2020 census, and the fact that shapes everything else about it is that the county line runs through the middle of town: part of Milan is in Washtenaw County and part is in Monroe County. That is not a technicality. It decides which county records the deed, which treasurer sends the tax bill, and where you go to look anything up. Two houses a few streets apart can answer that question differently, so it is settled before anything else here, not after.

The place was settled as early as 1831, incorporated as a village in 1885, and only became a city in 1967 — a long village history that is still legible downtown. The Main Street Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1999, covers the commercial blocks on East and West Main. The Friend–Hack House on County Street, an 1888 Stick/Eastlake house listed in 1991, is now a museum run by the Milan Area Historical Society. Outside the old center the housing is largely mid-century and later, on a scale that keeps the whole city walkable.

Milan Area Schools serves the city from six buildings and crosses the county line the same way the city does. US-23 runs south to north along the eastern edge as a four-lane freeway, which puts Ann Arbor about fifteen minutes north and Toledo a straight run south — the reason a lot of buyers priced out of Ann Arbor end up looking here. The federal correctional institution people associate with Milan is mostly in York Township rather than in the city itself.
