Maybee

A railroad village of 545, eight miles east of Dundee

Maybee is a village of 545 people at the 2020 census, in Exeter Township, Monroe County. It sits about eight miles east-northeast of Dundee, roughly halfway between downtown Monroe and Milan, which puts most of the places anyone here works within a twenty-minute drive.

The village exists because of a railroad. It was established in 1873 when the Canada Southern Railway built its line through, and incorporated as a village in 1899. That is the shape of the place: a small platted center laid along the tracks, with township farmland starting almost immediately outside it.

Schools are the thing to settle first, and Maybee is the sharpest example of it anywhere I cover. Exeter Township is served by four separate districts — most of the township by Airport Community Schools, the northwestern part by Milan Area Schools — and the village itself is split: most of Maybee is in Monroe Public Schools, while a small western portion falls in Dundee Community Schools. In a village of 545 people, the district can change from one side of it to the other. Never assume it from the address.
