Brighton is two governments sharing a name. The City of Brighton — 7,446 at the 2020 census, a village from 1867 and a city since 1928 — is one of only two incorporated cities in Livingston County; Howell is the other. Brighton Charter Township, about 19,144 people with its hall on Buno Road, is run separately. Both ZIPs, 48114 and 48116, straddle the two, so a Brighton mailing address settles neither the tax bill nor the school. Downtown sits where Main Street meets Grand River Avenue, wrapped around the Mill Pond — Ore Creek, dammed — and Brighton Area Schools serves the city plus parts of Brighton, Genoa, Green Oak and Hamburg townships.
The stock reads older than it is. Downtown is nineteenth-century — the Western House on West Main has stood since 1873 — but the median Brighton house was built around 1986, so character inventory is thin. Beyond downtown sit Oak Pointe on West Crooked Lake, Pine Creek Ridge, the gated Dominion off Spencer Road and lake streets that mix converted cottages with rebuilds. Value turns on jurisdiction: city millage runs well above the township's and buys walkability and municipal water and sewer rather than a well and septic. Then frontage, which outranks the house. Brighton Township splits across four school districts, so Huntmore Estates carries a Brighton address and Hartland schools.

How these are counted
Medians are over homes for sale or sold — houses, condos and small multi-family; land and farms are left out. “Over asking” means above the price a home was last listed at, not its original price, and is taken over the sales that carried one. Price per square foot divides by above-grade finished area where the MLS reports it and by the total finished area where it does not; each figure is labelled with the one it used, so two figures labelled differently are not measuring the same thing. Below 5 sales a figure gives the count without a median, and a single sale is given no figure at all.
Neighborhoods & subdivisions
Grouped by the government a home answers to. City taxes, township taxes and village government are three different bills, and a Brighton mailing address can sit under any of them. Recorded plats are not everyday neighborhood names, so check jurisdiction and school assignment by address, not by heading.
